Israel Will Return from Exile

Micah 5:6-13

“The time is coming” says the LORD “where i will gather together the people i punished, those who have suffered in exile. They are crippled and far from home, but i will make a new begining with those who are left and they will become a great nation. I will rule over them on mount zion from that time on and forever.”

And you, Jerusalem, where God, like a shepherd, watches over his people, will once again be the capital of the kingdom that was yours , why do you cry out so loudly? Is it because you have king and your counsellors are dead? Twist and groan, people of Jerusalem, like a woman giving birth, for now you will have to leave the city and live in the open country. You will have togo to Babylon , but there the LORD will save you from your enemies.
Many nations have gathered to attack you, They say, “Jerusalem must be destroyed! We will see the city in ruins!
But these nations did not know what is in the LORD’s mind. They do not realize that they have been gathered in the same way that corn is brought to be threshed.

The LORD says, “People of Jerusalem, go and punish your enemies! i will make you as strong as bull with iron horse and bronze hoofs. You will crush many nations, and the wealth they got by violence you will present to me.
People of Jerusalem, gather your forces! We are besieged! They are attacking the leader of Israel.

May the LORD bless his word, Amen.

Jeremiah Warns Against Pride

Jeremiah 13:15-27

People of Israel, the LORD has spoken
Be humble and listen to him
Honour the LORD, your God, before he brings darkness, and you stumble on the mountains, before he turns into deep darkness, the light you hoped for.
If you will not listen, i will cry in secret because of your pride;
I will cry bitterly, and my tears will flow because the LORD’s people have been taken away as captives.

The LORD said to me, “Tell the king and his mother to come down from their throne, because their beautiful crowns have fallen from their heads.
The towns of southern judah are under siege; no one can get through to them. All the people of judah have been taken away into exile.”

Jerusalem, look! Your enemies are coming down from the north! Where are the people entrusted to your care, your people you were so proud of? What will you say when people you thought were your friends conqure you and rule over you? You will be in pain like a woman giving birth. If you ask why all these has happened to you, why your clothes have been torn off and you have been raped, it is because your sin is so terrible.

Can a Nubian change the colour of his skin, or a leopard remove its spot? if they could, then you that do nothing but evil learn to do right, The LORD will scatter you like straw that is blown away by the desert wind. He has said that this will be your fate. This is what he has decided to do with you, because you have forgoten himand have trusted in false gods. The LORD himself will strip off your clothes and expose you to shame. He has seen you go after pegans gods on the hills and in the fields, like a man lusting after his neighbour’s wife or like a stallion after a mare. People of Jerusalem, you are doomed! when will you ever be pure?

May the LORD bless his word, Amen.

A Call to Repentance

Jeremiah 4:1-4
The LORD says, “People of Israel, if you want to turn, then turn back to me. If you are faithful to me and remove the idols I hate, it will be right for you to swear by my name. Then all the nations will ask me to bless them and they will praise me.”

The LORD says to the people of Judah and Jerusalem, “Plough up your unploughed fields; do not show your seeds among thorns. Keep your covenant with me, your LORD, and dedicate yourselves to me, you people of Judah and Jerusalem. If you don’t, my anger will burn like fire because of the evil things you have done. It will burn, and there will be no one to put it out.”

May the LORD bless his word, Amen.

The Idolatory of God’s People

Jeremiah 3:19-25
The LORD says,
“Israel, I waited to accept you as my child and give you a delightful land, the most beautiful land in all the world.
I wanted you to call me father, and never again turn away from me.
But like an unfaithful wife, you have not been faithful to me.
I the LORD, have spoken.”

A noise is heard on the hilltops: it is the people of Israel crying and pleading, because they have lived sinful lives and have forgotten the LORD their God.
Return, all of you who have turned away from the LORD; he will heal you and make you faithful.

You say, “Yes, we are coming to the LORD, because he is our God. We were not helped at all by our pagan worship on the hilltops. Help for Israel comes only from the LORD our God.

But the worship of Baal, the God of herds, sons and daughters everything that our ancestors have worked for since ancient times. We should lie down in shame and let our disgrace cover us. We and our ancestors have always sinned against the LORD our God; we have never obeyed his commands.”

May the LORD bless his word, Amen.

God Calls Isaiah to be a Prophet

Isaiah 6:1-13
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord. He was sitting on his throne, high and exalted, and his robe filled the whole Temple. Round him flaming creatures were standing, each of which had six wings. Each creature covered it’s face with two wings, and it’s body with two, and used the other two for flying. They were calling out to each other:

“Holy, holy, holy!
The LORD Almighty is holy!
His glory fills the world.”
The sound of their voices made the foundation of the Temple shake, and the Temple itself was filled with smoke.
I said, “There is no hope for me! I am doomed because every word that passes my lips is sinful, and I live among a people whose every word is sinful. And yet, with my own eyes, I have seen the King, the LORD Almighty!”

Then one of the creatures flew down to me, carrying a burning coal that he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. He touched my lips with the burning coal and said, “This has touched your lips, and now your guilt is gone, and your Sins are forgiven”.
Then I heard the LORD say, “Whom shall I send?” “Who will be our messenger?” “I will go” Send me!
So he told me to go and give the people this message: “No matter how much you listen, you will not understand. No matter how much you look, you will not know what is happening.

Then he said to me, “Make the minds of these people dull, their ears deaf, and their eyes blind, so that they cannot see or hear or understand. If they did, they might turn to me and be healed.”
I asked, “How long will it be like this, Lord?”
He answered, “Until the cities are ruined and empty, until the houses are uninhabited, until the land itself is a desolate. Even if one person out of ten remains in the land, he too will be destroyed; he will be like the stump of an oak tree that has been cut down.
(The stump represents a new begining for God’s people.)

May the Lord bless his word, Amen.

David Made King of Judea

2 Samuel 2:1-6

After this, David asked the LORD, “Shall I go and take control of one of the towns of Judah?”
“Yes” the LORD answered.
“Which one?” David asked.
“Hebron,” the LORD said. So David went to Hebron, taking with him his two wives: Ahinoam, who was from Jezreel, and Abigail, Nabal’s widow, who was from Carmel. He also took his men and their families, and they settled in the towns round Hebron and anointed David as King of Judah.

When David heard that the people of Jabesh in Gilead had buried Saul, he sent some men there with the message: your loyalty to your king by burying him. And now may the LORD be kind and faithful to you. I took will treat you well because of what you have done. Be strong and brave! Saul your king is dead, and the people of Judah have anointed me as their king.”

May the LORD bless his word, Amen

God’s Own People

Deuteronomy 7:10-25
Just as the LORD your God promised your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, he will give you a land with large and prosperous cities which you did not dig, and vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant. When the LORD brings you into this land and you have all you want to eat, make certain that you do not forget the LORD who rescued you from Egypt, where you were slaves . Honour the LORD your God, worship only him, and make your promises in his name alone. Do not worship other gods, any of the gods of the people around you. If anger will come against you like fire and will destroy you completely, because the LORD your God , who is present with you, tolerates no rivals.

Do not put the LORD your God to the test, as you did at Massah. Be sure that you obey all the laws that he has given you. Do what the LORD says is right and good, and all will go well with you. You will be able to take possession of the fertile land that the LORD promised your ancestors, and you will drive out your enemies, as he promised.

In time to come your children will ask you, “Why did the LORD command us to obey all these laws?
Then tell them, we were slaves of the king of Egypt, and the LORD rescued us by his great power. With our own eyes, we saw him work miracles and do terrifying things to the Egyptians and give us this land, as he had promised our ancestors he would. Then the LORD out God commanded us to obey all these laws and to honour him. If we do, he will always watch over our nation and keep it prosperous. If we faithfully obey every thing that God has commanded us, he will be pleased with us.

May the LORD bless his word, Amen.

The Question about Fasting

Luke 6:33-39

Some people said to Jesus, “The disciples of John fast frequently and offers prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same; but your disciples eat and drink.”

Jesus answered, “Do you think you can make the guest at a wedding party go without food as long as the bride groom is with them? Of course not! But the day will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them and then they will fast.”

Jesus also told them this parable “No one tears a piece off a new coat to patch up an old coat. If he does, he will have torn the new coat , and the pieces of new cloth will not match the old . Nor does anyone pour new wine into used wineskins, because the new will pour out, and the skins will be ruined. Instead , new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins! And no one wants fresh wineskins! And no one wants new wine after drinking old wine . “The old is better,” he said.

May the LORD bless his word, Amen.

Jesus Predicts their Punishment

Mathew 24:29-36

How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You make fine tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of those who lived good lives; and you claim that if you had lived during the time of your ancestors, you would not have done what they did and killed the prophets. So you actually admit that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.

Go on, then and finish what your ancestors started! You snakes and children of snakes! How do you expect to escape from being condemned to hell?

And so I tell you that I will send you prophets and wise men and teachers; you will kill some of them, crucify others, and whip others in the synagogues and chase them from town to town. As a result , the punishment for the murder of all innocent people will fall on you, from the murder of innocent Abel to the murder of all Zachariah son of Berachiah, whom you murdered between the Temple and the altar. I tell you indeed; the punishment for all these murders will fall on the people of this day.

May the LORD bless his word, Amen
